THE EARS ARE ACTIVE DURING SLEEPING

So We sealed their ears [with sleep] in the cave for a number of years. (Qur'an, 18:11)

The original Arabic of the phrase "We sealed their ears" in the Qur'an is the verb daraba. This bears the metaphorical meaning of "We have made them sleep." Used in reference to the ears, daraba means "preventing the ears from hearing." The fact that only the sense of hearing is mentioned here is very significant.

According to recent scientific discoveries, the ear is the only sensory organ active while a person is sleeping. This is why we need an alarm clock to wake up. The wisdom of the phrase "We sealed their ears" is, in all probability, that Allah closed the hearing of the young people in question, for which reason they remained asleep for many years.

No excuse to miss As-Salat (the Prayers)

Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran: "Verily! I am Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Ana (none has the Right to be worshipped but I), so Worship Me, and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) for My remembrance". (the Holy Quran, chapter 20, vers 14)

Abu’huraira. 'Allah be pleased with him', narrated: I heard Allah’s Apostle 'Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him' saying: “If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?” They said: “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet 'Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him' added: “That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah erases evil deeds.” (Sahih Bukhari, The Book of Prayer Times) [1]

Abu’huraira 'Allah be pleased with him' narrated: Allah’s Apostle 'Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him' said: “Angels come to you in succession by night and day and all of them get together at the time of the Fajr and Asr prayers. Those who have passed the night with you (or stayed with you) ascend (to the Heaven) whom Allah asks, though He knows everything about you well: “How did you leave my slaves?” The angels reply: “When we left them they were praying and when we reached them, they were praying.” (Sahih Bukhari, The Book of Prayer Times)[2]

Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran: "Say (O Muhammad): Verily, My Salât (prayer), My sacrifice, My living, and My dying are for Allâh, the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and All that exists)". (the Holy Quran, chapter 6, vers 162)

Istighfar- Seeking Forgiveness

The Prophet ( peace be upon him), said, "The best supplication for forgiveness is to say, 'Allahumma

(O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and

I am Your servant, and I try my best to keep my covenant (faith) with You and to live in the hope of

Your promise. I seek refuge in You from evil done by me. I acknowledge Your favors upon me and I

acknowledge my sins. So forgive me for none forgives sins but You."') The Prophet (peace be upon

him), added, "If somebody recites this during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day

before the evening, he will be one of the people of Paradise. And if somebody recites it at night with

firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be one of the people of Paradise." (Bukhari)

Biomimetics: Drawing Inspiration from the Design in Living Things

There is instruction for you in cattle. From the contents of their bellies, from between the dung and blood, We give you pure milk to drink, easy for drinkers to swallow. (Qur’an, 16:66)

And there is certainly a lesson for you in your livestock. We give you to drink from what is in their bellies and there are many ways in which you benefit from them, and some of them you eat; and you are conveyed on them and on ships as well. (Qur’an, 23:21-22)

Before scientists and research and development experts embark on new projects, they usually look for models in living things and imitate their systems and designs. In other words, they see and study the designs created in nature by Allah and, inspired by these, go on to develop their own new technologies.

This approach has given birth to biometrics, a new branch of science that seeks to imitate living things. In recent times, this branch of science has come to be widely applied in the world of technology. The use of the word “ibratan,” (to learn from, advice, importance, important thing, or model) in the above verses is most wise in this regard.

Biomimetics refers to all of the substances, equipment, mechanisms, and systems that people produce in order to imitate the systems present in nature. The scientific community currently feels a great need for the use of such equipment, particularly in the fields of nanotechnology, robot technology, artificial intelligence, medicine, and the military.

Biomimicry was first put forward by Janine M. Benyus, a writer and scientific observer from Montana. This concept was later analysed by many other people and began to find applications. Some of the comments made regarding biomimicry are as follows:

The theme of "biomimicry" is that we have much to learn from the natural world, as model, measure, and mentor. What these researchers have in common is a reverence for natural designs, and the inspiration to use them to solve human problems. 1

David Oakey, product strategist for Interface Inc., a company that uses nature to increasing product quality and productivity, says:

Nature is my mentor for business and design, a model for the way of life. Nature's system has worked for millions of years … Biomimicry is a way of learning from nature. 2

Scientists who began to favour this rapidly spreading idea accelerated their studies by using nature’s incomparable and flawless designs as models. These designs represent models for technological research, for they provide the maximum productivity for the least amount of materials and energy, and are self-maintaining, environmentally friendly, silent, aesthetically attractive, resistant, and long-lasting. The High Country News newspaper described biomimetics as “a scientific movement” and made the following comment:

By using natural systems as models, we can create technologies that are more sustainable than those in use today. 3

anine M. Benyus, who believed that models in nature should be imitated, gave the following examples in her book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature (Perennial: 2002):

• Hummingbirds cross the Gulf of Mexico on less than 3 grams (one tenth of an ounce) of fuel,
• Dragonflies outmanoeuvre our best helicopters,
• Heating and air-conditioning systems in termite mounds are superior in terms of equipment and energy consumption to those made by human beings,
• A bat’s high-frequency transmitter is more efficient and sensitive than our own radar systems,
• Light-emitting algae combine various chemicals to illuminate their bodies,
• Arctic fish and frogs freeze solid and then spring to life, having protected their organs from ice damage,
• Chameleons and cuttlefish change the pattern of their skin to blend instantly with their surroundings,
• Bees, turtles, and birds navigate without maps, and
• Whales and penguins dive without scuba gear.

These astonishing mechanisms and designs in nature, of which we have cited only a few, have the potential to enrich technology in a wide range of fields. This potential is becoming ever more obvious as our accumulated knowledge and technological means increase.

All animals possess many features that amaze human beings. Some have the ideal hydrodynamic shape that allows them to move through water, and others employ senses that appear very foreign to us. Most of these are features that researchers have encountered for the first time, or, rather, that they have only recently discovered. On occasion, it is necessary to bring together prominent scientists from such fields as computer technology, mechanical engineering, electronics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology in order to imitate just one feature of a living thing.

Scientists are amazed when confronted with the incomparable structures and systems they are discovering with every passing day, and use that amazement to inspire themselves to produce new technologies for humanity’s benefit. Realising that the existing perfect systems and extraordinary techniques applied in nature are far superior to their own knowledge and intellect, they became aware of these matchless solutions to existing problems and are now resorting to the designs in nature to resolve problems that have eluded them for years. As a result, they will perhaps achieve success in a very short time. Moreover, by imitating nature, scientists are making very important gains with regard to time and labour and also to the targeted use of material resources.

Today we see the developing technology gradually discovering the miracles of creation and using the extraordinary designs in living things, as in the case of biomimetics, in the service of humanity. Benyus has stated that “‘Doing it nature's way’ has the potential to change the way we grow food, make materials, harness energy, heal ourselves, store information, and conduct business.” 4 The following are just a few of the many scientific papers to have considered such subjects:

“Science is Imitating Nature,” 5
“Life's Lessons in Design,” 6
“Biomimicry: Secrets Hiding in Plain Sight,” 7
“Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature,” 8
“Biomimicry: Genius That Surrounds Us,” 9
“Biomimetics: Creating Materials from Nature's Blueprints,” 10 and
“Engineers Ask Nature for Design Advice.” 11

In the nineteenth century, nature was imitated only in aesthetic terms. Artists and architects of that time were influenced by nature and used examples of the structures’ external appearances in their works. Yet the realisation of nature’s extraordinary designs and that these could be used to benefit human beings only began in the twentieth century with the study of natural mechanisms at the molecular level. Scientists today are learning from living things, as revealed in the Qur’an 1,400 years ago.

The Quranic concept of Hijaab

Islam has based its social structure on the institution of family. For the development of such a society in which the basic unit is the family, it is essential to regard chastity and modesty as fundamental values. It is to safeguard and protect these values that the Shariah has laid down a whole code of social etiquette and communal conduct. These directives have been discussed in the Quran very minutely. Since, their interpretation, in recent times, has often touched the two extremes, it is, once again, necessary to contemplate on the Quran in quest for the ariston metron - the golden mean.

A deep deliberation on the Quran reveals that these directives, which have been dealt with in detail in Surah Ahzaab and Surah Noor, are basically of three categories. Following is a brief analysis of these directives.

The first category of directives pertains to safe and secure places. According to the Quran, such secure places may either be residential ones (bait-i-maskoona) like houses and apartments or non-residential ones (bait-i-ghair maskoona) like offices and schools. It says that if some friends, relatives or acquaintances visit one another, they should follow a certain decorum. If the visited place is residential in nature, the visitor should first of all properly introduce himself by paying salutations to the residents of a house. In this regard, the Prophet (sws) has instructed the visitor to knock three times at the door and if he hears no reply, he should turn back and not start an incessant session of pounding the door. Furthermore, if the residents are not in a position to welcome him and they ask him to return, he should withdraw without any ill-will towards them. However, in case the visited place is non-residential, no formal permission is required. Once a person has entered his destination, the men and women who are present, should observe two regulations: they should guard their gazes from taking undue liberty and take care that the dress they are wearing properly covers them. Women should observe one additional regulation as well: they should not display their finery except those which is evident, that is their clothes or any adornments worn on the face and hands. For this purpose, the Quran says they should cover their chests by their head-coverings and should not strike their feet in a manner which draws attention to any ornaments they may be wearing. Furthermore, the Quran says that it is not necessary to observe this third regulation with mahram relatives, but as far as the first two regulations are concerned they must be observed without exception to anyone whosoever. It is evident, therefore, that men and women while observing these regulations can eat and converse together. The Quran says:

"O ye who believe! Enter not the houses other than your own until you have introduced yourselves and wished peace to those in them. That is best for you that you may be heedful. If you find no one in the house, enter not until permission is given to you. If you are asked to go back, go back, for it is purer for you. Allah has knowledge of all which you do. It is no sin for you to enter non-residential places in which there is benefit for you. And Allah has knowledge of what you reveal and what you conceal. [O Prophet!] tell believing men to restrain their eyes and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. And Allah is well aware of what you do. And tell the believing women to restrain their eyes and to guard their private parts and to display of their finery only that which is apparent by drawing their coverings over their bosoms. They should not reveal their finery to anyone save their husbands or their fathers or their husbands` fathers or their sons or their husbands` sons or their brothers or their brothers` sons or their sisters` sons or other women of acquaintance or their slaves or male servants lacking in physical needs or children who have no awareness of the hidden aspects of women. [In order not to reveal their finery except which is apparent], they should [also] not stamp their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. Believers turn to Allah in repentance that you may prosper." [24:27-31]

The second category of directives pertains to places which are not secure and unprotected from people of lewd character. Markets, road sides, shops and parks are examples of places where such people might create nuisance for women. The Quran tells Muslim women to wear large cloaks when they go out so that a part of the cloaks covers their faces as well, for this is the way dignified women dress up when they go out. This dress will identify them as decent women and they will not be teased. The Quran says:

"O Prophet! tell your wives and daughters and the wives of the believers to draw a part of their cloaks on their faces [when they go abroad]. That is more proper so that they may be recognized and are not harmed. Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." [33:59]

The third category of these directives relates to the leading women of a society, who set an example for others. Owing to the special position of the Prophet (sws), his wives occupied this place in his times. Consequently, these directives have been addressed to them. It is clear that the leading women of a society play a very essential role. The values which they adopt become the values of the society, and the trends they set become the trends of the society. If they falter, the whole society falters and if they remain on the right path, the whole society remains on the right path. It is due to the special position of such women that some additional directives have been given to prevent any scandal mongers from spreading mischief.

Firstly, womenfolk of such stature must refrain from openly exhibiting their embellishments. The Quran strictly forbids them to adorn themselves and go about displaying themselves. It says:

"Wives of the Prophet! stay in your homes and do not display your adornments as women used to do in the days of ignorance." [33:33]

Secondly, they should take care that whenever, they have to say something to people in whose hearts there is the ailment of lewdness, they should speak without showing any softness to them:

"O Wives of the Prophet! you are not like other women. If you fear Allah do not be too complaisant of speech lest one in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire." [33:32]

These are the Quranic directives of Hijaab. The social etiquette they depict is poised magnificently between the extremes human civilizations have often witnessed. Like all other directives of Islam their object is to purify the soul and to purge it from evil, which is essential if man has to become worthy of the eternal life Heaven --- the eternal life for which the Almighty actually created him.

On the Day of Ressurection

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say:
The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [ The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have lied - you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known to his His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make known to his His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I left no path [untrodden] in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire.

It was related by Muslim (also by at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasa`i).

Forgiveness of sins

THE Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) urged that one fasts in Ramadan,
explaining its excellence and high station, such that if the fasting
person had sins as many as the foam upon the sea, then they would be
forgiven for him through this pure and blessed act of worship. From Abu
Hurairah, radiyallaahu anhu, from the Prophet who said: He who fasts
Ramadan, due to eemaan and hoping for reward (from Allah) then his
previous sins are forgiven.

From Abu Hurairah, radiyallaahu anhu, that the Prophet climbed upon the
mimbar (pulpit) and said: Aameen [O Allah grant it], aameen, aameen. So it
was said, O Messenger of Allah, you climbed upon the mimbar and said,
aameen, aameen, aameen? So he said: Indeed Jibraaeel, alayhis salaam, came
to me and said, Whoever reaches the month of Ramadan and does not have
[his sins] forgiven and so enters the Fire, then may Allah distance him,
say aameen So I said: aameen ...

* That supplication (duaa) is answered and freedom from the Fire is
granted

He (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said: There are in the month of Ramadan
in every day and night those to whom Allah grants freedom from the Fire,
and there is for every Muslim a supplication which he can make and will be
granted .

* He will be amongst the true followers of the prophets and the martyrs

From Amr ibn Murrah al-Juhanee, radiyallaahu anhu, who said: A man came to
the Prophet and said: O Messenger of Allah what if I testify that none has
the right to be worshipped but Allah and that you are the Messenger of
Allah, and I observe the five daily prayers, and I pay the Zakat, and I
fast and stand in prayer in Ramadan, then amongst whom shall I be? He
said: Amongst the true followers of the prophets and the martyrs.

Awesome Dua

And remember when Ibrahim (Abraham) and (his son) Isma’il (Ishmael) were raising the foundations of the House (the Ka’bah at Makkah), (saying), “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Truly! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”
[AlBaqarah:127]

Let’s look at this situation: we have two of the best of Allah’s creation (Ibrahim and Ismael, upon them be peace) making the most holy structure on the face of the Earth (the Ka’bah) in the most sanctified place on Earth (Makkah)…what is it the thought that is going through their minds? Acceptance of this act.

Ibrahim, upon him be peace, was tested by Allah throughout his life. Ismael, upon him be peace, was tried by Allah since he was a little baby. They came out of these tests with the stamp of approval from Allah regarding their sincerity…YET, they are concerned whether their actions will be accepted by Allah…and they are praying to Allah WHILE making the Ka’bah to accept their efforts!

How often do we ask Allah to accept our acts of worship? None of us can ever reach the level of Ibrahim or Ismael, upon them be peace. None of us can ever stand the trials they went through. None of us can ever do a da’wah project like that of Ibrahim and Ismael, upon them be peace. Yet, these two Prophets of Allah were beseeching Allah to accept their acts of worship…and what are we doing?

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلۡ مِنَّآ‌ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيم

Allah, accept all our deeds from us and multiply our rewards. Truly, You and Only You are the Al-Samee’, Al-’Aleem.

The material world

The world rules whoever loves and seeks it, and serves whoever abandons and denies it. The world is that which desires and that which is desired. Whoever desires the world is rejected by it. Whoever rejects the world is followed by it. The world is a bridge over the road to the Hereafter. Cross that bridge, but do not behave as if you will remain on it forever. It is unwise to build palaces on bridges. Take as much from the world as will lead you to the Hereafter, but leave behind that which will prevent you from entering it.
Yahya ibn Muadh

A person's true wealth

A person's true wealth is the good deeds that he does in this world.
The Prophet Mohammed (may God bless him and grant him peace)

Good and the bad deeds

Narrated ‘Abdullâh bin ‘Abbâs : Allah’s Messenger said that Allah the Glorious said, “Verily, Allah has ordered that the good and the bad deeds be written down. Then He explained it clearly how (to write):He who intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah records it for him as a full good deed, but if he carries out his intention, the Glorious and the Great Allah writes it down for him with Him as from ten to seven hundred times, and even many times more. But if he intends to do an evil act and has not done it, then Allah writes it down with Him as a full good deed, but if he intends it and has done it, Allah writes it down as one bad deed. Muslim Students – SU is an organisation that encompasses students studying at Stockholm University (including all departments) and the Stockholm Institute of Education (Lärarhögskolan) . Our goal is to provide students who are interested in Islam with the opportunity to meet one another and to encourage dialogue. We wish to promote both individual and collective development through a wide array of activities held during the year.

The goals of Muslim Students - SU include working to increase awareness of Islam and Muslims. Through this, we hope to generate tolerance and understanding towards diverse modes of thought. Muslim Students- SU will endeavour to strengthen, develop and endorse the integration of the Muslim identity in Sweden. We will work towards this goal until it is considered as natural to be both a Muslim and Swedish without there needing to be a contradiction between these two identities.

Activities

”Muslims are spoken of, not to” – this is the way that the orientalists reasoned. It is a deeply rooted mindset in our part of the world that is kept alive to this very day. We will strive to shatter this mindset through dialogue. And it is above all dialogue that will be the keyword steering the organisation.

Among the activities planned for this year are:

· The Green Room - monthly seminars

· Social activities (such as picnics and dinners)

· Ramadan – a time for unity and joy with

· Eid celebrations – the highlight of the Islamic year

· Study-circles with a focus on Islam

· Lectures and debates

· A sponsorship program for exchange students

· Homework aid - for young people who need help with homework

Muslimska Studenter-Stockholms Universitet
